The German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) brings together 23 leading German marine research institutions with the aim of strengthening the sustainable use of coasts, seas and the ocean.

On March 23, 2023, the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) gave members of the Lower Saxony state parliament and representatives of ministries, state companies, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders an insight into their research activities at a parliamentary evening in Hannover. In the dialogue between science and politics, the parliamentarians had the opportunity to raise their own questions. The focus of the event was on the conflict between the protection and use of marine spaces with a special focus on energy supply as well as coastal and nature protection.

FZK is one of the 23 leading German marine research institutions.

After welcoming words by Falko Mohrs (Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture) and Markus Bosse (Vice President of the Lower Saxony State Parliament), Angela Ittel (President of Technische Universität Braunschweig) gave a keynote speech. Helmut Hillebrand (Director of the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity) gave a keynote on the topic "Action knowledge for biodiversity change using the example of a DAM research mission".

In a subsequent panel discussion, Torsten Schlurmann (FZK), Anne Rickmeyer (NLWKN), Corinna Schrum (Institute for Coastal Systems, Hereon) and Bettina Taylor (BUND Meeresbüro) discussed conflicts between the protection and use of the North Sea in the area of tension between energy supply and coastal protection and nature conservation. The discussion was moderated by Ulrike Heckmann.

An exhibition with numerous exhibits illustrated the research and subject areas of the members of the DAM and offered the participants the opportunity for lively exchange.
